Mission
Community of persons serving the society and its members, the
Université de Sherbrooke is dedicated to open teaching, promotion of
critical learning and quest for new knowledge, through education,
research, creation and social commitment.
Anchored in the heart of Sherbrooke, university city, and proud of its
50 years of achievements, the Université de Sherbrooke intends to deserve
a first-rate reputation among the best universities in the world. Among
other things, it will enjoy notable growth in its power of attraction, its
impact on the society, its partners of choice and in the sense of
belonging of all the members of its community.
Teaching
Across its 330 programs, the Université de Sherbrooke offers
an education at all levels and in all the major sectors of human activity.
Its nine faculties: Administration, Law; Education, Physical and Sports
Education, Engineering, Letters and Human Sciences, Medicine and Health
Sciences, Sciences and
Theology offer some fourty programs of undergraduate
study (without counting the multiple combinations of possible minors).
There are some fifty graduate studies programs at the Master's level and
about thirty in the doctoral program including the research-based (presentation
of a thesis or dissertation) or the professional-based that offers a
program of courses. Many are given on a continuing education or part-time
basis as are other certificate and diploma programs and micro-programs.
One of the greatest strengths of the Université de Sherbrooke is its
co-operative study program: alternating study sessions with remunerated
internships ("stages") in the workplace, to complement the
knowledge developed at the university, with a practical work experience.
Research
Thanks to numerous research groups, centres and chairs in
various fields, the Université de Sherbrooke has fashioned an excellent
reputation for itself with its research capabilities. The successes of the
research teams at the Université de Sherbrooke are growing. Grants and
contracts for research, which totalled $25 million five years ago, will
approach $45 million in 2002-2003, a growth rate of 78 %.
The Université de Sherbrooke has also been engaged for the last
several years in numerous projects of co-operation with partners in Africa,
South America and the Caribbean.

Value-enhancing Research Activities
The Université de Sherbrooke launched its first co-ordinated
activities to promote its research achievements in 1986. From its very
beginnings, the office of corporate liaison (BLEU - Bureau Liaison
Entreprises Université) enjoyed remarkable success. Up until now, 45% of
the technologies patented by the university have been transferred to
companies including, among other things, the application of the ACELP
technology, which is now an essential element in world telephone
technology. Thanks to the work of these researchers, the Université de
Sherbrooke holds more than 100 patents, ranking it in first place in
Canada in terms of annual royalties for discoveries. Over 150 other patent
requests have been deposited and should soon be approved by the
appropriate authorities.
